To work in advertising, marketing, and public relations in BC, you may choose to earn the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) designation. Eligibility can be achieved after at least of five years of work experience and completion of the yearlong accreditation process.

Journalists

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the scientific, humanistic, and critical study of human communication in a variety of formats, media, and contexts. These programs include courses in the theory and practice of interpersonal, group, organizational, professional, and intercultural communication; speaking and listening; verbal and non-verbal interaction; rhetorical theory and criticism; performance studies; argumentation and persuasion; technologically mediated communication; popular culture; and various contextual applications.

Speech communication and rhetoric

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the analysis and criticism of media institutions and media texts, how people experience and understand media content, and the roles of media in producing and transforming culture. These programs include courses in communications regulation, law, and policy; media history; media aesthetics, interpretation, and criticism; the social and cultural effects of mass media; cultural studies; the economics of media industries; visual and media literacy; and the psychology and behavioural aspects of media messages, interpretation, and utilization.

Advertising and Public Relations Managers

Advertising and Public Relations Practitioners

Correspondence, publication and regulatory clerks write correspondence, proofread material for accuracy, compile material for publication, verify, record and process forms and documents, such as applications, licences, permits, contracts, registrations and requisitions, and perform other related clerical duties in accordance with established procedures, guidelines and schedules. They are employed by newspapers, periodicals, publishing firms and by establishments throughout the private and public sectors.

Managers in publishing, motion pictures, broadcasting and performing arts plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate operations within publishing firms, film, theatre and record production companies and broadcasting facilities. They are employed by radio and television stations, by newspaper, periodical and book publishing firms, and by film, theatre, record and video production companies.

Journalists research, investigate, interpret and communicate news and public affairs through newspapers, television, radio and other media. They are employed by radio and television networks and stations, newspapers and magazines. Journalists may also work on a freelance basis.

The Graphic Communications Technology Management Diploma gives you the knowledge and skills to manage production processes in the business of digital imaging, as well as hands-on training with the equipment and software you’ll be using in your graphics career.  You’ll learn to design and produce marketing materials such as posters, large format signage, labels, brochures, books, and other finished products. You learn the latest graphic design software, business processes, art direction, production management, and how to operate high-tech imaging and finishing technologies to prepare you for modern careers in imaging technology. In this program, you’ll focus on three core industry areas: business practices, computer software, and output. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared to work in a variety of roles in imaging technology, such as graphic designer, production artist, production coordinator, marketing and sales manager, digital print operator, and more. 

Graphic Communications Technology Management: Diploma

The Communication Studies Diploma provides a foundation for students who are aiming at careers in journalism, media relations, public affairs, radio or television, publishing, policy analysis, and more. You'll take courses in mass media, cultural industries in Canada, society and digital media, writing, news and television, strategic communication, and more. 

Communication Studies Diploma

The Communication Design Diploma explores principles of communication design and critical skills in web programming. Students will be equipped to pursue entry-level roles in communication and graphic design, front-end web design and development, user experience design and more. Students will complete capstone projects that highlight their skills in design and development. 

Communication Design Diploma (NIC)

The Communications, Culture, and Journalism Studies Diploma provides the foundations of media and writing, and explore the functions of news and communications media, the history of journalism, and cultural policy and theory. Particular attention will be paid to questions of social justice, as well as of identity and constructions of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nationality. While you may proceed directly to potential entry-level careers in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, advertising, research, writing, publishing, consulting or new media, especially in small markets and independent digital environments, completion of this program is intended primarily to provide you with the liberal arts education necessary for further study.

The Writing and Publishing Diploma takes through the first stages of the writing process to the final post-production stages of publishing in a variety of formats. You will develop your writerly personae, hone you critical voices, and learn how to write professionally for multiple audiences. You'll take creative writing workshops, web publishing labs, book design studios, and professional editing classes. Upon graduation, you may choose to work in traditional or new media outlets, or pursue further studies in creative writing, journalism, marketing, or media studies.
